M4 versus N4

While rummaging around on the internet looking for information on the new M4 we came across a few interesting commentaries.

Sarah Carey in Enfield posts some observations on the M4 and the attached comments are worth a read.

Julianstown website refers to an Irish Times article detailing why so many artic’s are ploughing through the village. Apparently the road hauliers association are grouping together in the New Year to do something about the tolls. We’ll see.

Eastmeath.org cover a letter in the Irish Times pointing out some flaws in the tolling system.

Rumours about getting through for free if there are more than 6 cars in a queue and / or a 20 second delay are abounding. Unfortunately they aren’t quite true.

If you want to bore yourself reading the bye-laws changed to allow the toll to operate have a look here.

Only if there is an average of 6 cars or more across ALL open toll gates can you get through for free. And cunningly the toll operator is leaving the easypass lane open even though its not in operation. But still there is a window of opportunity here. If 6 toll gates are open then everyone should queue for one toll gate. Once there are more than 36 cars in a queue (36 / 6 = 6) then the penalty clause kicks in and everyone else gets through for free. Assuming the first 36 people “volunteer” to form the queue…..forget it, it’ll never work in Ireland.

And finally struck across a site which covers some aspects of tolls and PPPs (Public private Partnerships)
