BROADBAND

Wireless Broadband provider Last Mile Ltd. yesterday announced that their service is now live in Kinnegad. Operating off Kinnegad water tower (behind the Maxol petrol station) residents in Clonard should be able to avail of this service.

The wireless broadband operates on a line of sight principle, so residents on the Kinnegad side of Clonard from Kanes Petrol Station up to and including the school will have no problem. Residents of Abbeyfields will have to “suck it and see” depending on whether their chimney clears the brow of the hill or they pay for a larger pole to mount the aerial.

Below is the announcement from broadband4kinnegad website.

After nearly 2 years since the campaign began, it brings me great pleasure to announce that today, 1st June 2005, marks the launch of Kinnegad’s wireless broadband service. The service is being provided by Last Mile Wireless through the Department of Communication’s Group Broadband Scheme. Orders for the service are now being accepted by Last Mile and they can be contacted directly on (090) 64 77701 or via their website.

I’d like to thank everyone for their support in this campaign, we have proven that with enough community spirit and effort, Kinnegad can stand shoulder to shoulder with larger towns in terms of the services which can be offered to residents and businesses.

Kindest regards,

Gareth Pelly

A brief list of frequently asked questions are listed below

Here are some answers from the Wireless Service Provider to Frequently Asked Questions about the proposed wireless service

Q: How does the proposed Wireless service provide Internet connectivity at my premises ?

A: One of our engineers install a small transceiver at your premises. This may be mounted indoors or outdoors depending on the signal strength in your area. A small antenna, a few inches square, will be mounted either outdoors or in a window. This unit, called the Customer Premises Equipment, is pointed at our local Base Station to create your Broadband Wireless connection.

Q: Do I need a phone line to avail of the proposed Wireless service ?

A: No. We provide a totally wireless service.

Q: What extra equipment do I need to buy to avail of the proposed service ?

A: Our standard installation includes the Customer Premises Equipment and cabling which should suit most situations. Our installer will drop an Ethernet (LAN) cable into your premises. You will need a PC that is equipped with an Ethernet interface, which is standard on most PCs today. In the case of a non-standard installation e.g. a long cable run is required, we will need to make an addition charge. To ensure that you are protected from malicious cyber attacks we recommend that you install a Firewall which we can provide for an additional fee. If you have a network it may be necessary to purchase additional networking equipment, this is dependant on the configuration of your network.

Q: Will I be provided with a Public IP Address ?

A: Yes. All of our service offerings include one Public IP Address as standard. In the case of our Residential service it will not be a Fixed Public IP Address, for all other Service levels we provide a Fixed Public IP Address.

Q: What is the difference between your service and DSL ?

A: The most important feature of our service is that it is available over a wide geographic area, while DSL is not. From a technical point-of-view our Residential service is at least as good as DSL (better in most cases) and all of our other services are significantly better than DSL.

Q: I have IOL Anytime service and it is cheaper than your service, why should I pay more to get your service ?

A: I agree that our service does not appear to be as cheap as the IOL Anytime service but to be honest we are not trying to compete with such limited low-grade offerings. We are offering a premium always-on Broadband service which will provide a high quality connection for the serious Internet user for a fixed price. There are no strings attached with our service, what you see is what you get. We expect that the Wireless service will appeal to Businesses, Schools, Teleworkers and serious home users. This is not a mass-market offering but will become mainstream in the future as the general Internet user understands the benefits of always-on Broadband. One important point to note is that our service does not require a phone line, this is a cost element that most people do not consider with conventional Internet access.

Q: Can I make phone calls on the Wireless service ?

A: We are not offering a telephone service at present but have plans to do so in the future. However, Voice over IP (VoIP) is a technology that is currently used to make local, national and international phone calls. Our service can support VoIP, so you can make free VoIP calls to other broadband internet users throughout the world. This is particularly beneficial for businesses that trade internationally.

Q: How fast is the download time with a Wireless connection?

A: Our Residential service offers speeds as fast as standard DSL while our higher level services offer even faster downloads. Download speeds are affected by many factors, the website that you are downloading from, and the number of users currently downloading data. When you get used to an always-on service speed becomes less of an issue, since you are not paying for the time you are online it does not really matter how long the download takes. If you need really high-speed downloads our higher level services may be what you need.

Q: Who supplies your Internet Backhaul, Eircom or ESAT?

A: Neither. We have built our own network and source Internet Transit from a number of the independant Internet providers so we are not locked into one provider.

Q: Can I do my own hosting on a residential service ?

A: Residential service users are not permitted to run a hosting service. All others service users are permitted to provide a hosting service, though we recommend a high level service if you wish to do this. We also provide a high-quality hosting service on our own servers.

Q: How long will it take for me to have Wireless service installed?

A: Our goal is to have installations completed in less than two weeks from date of order, in areas where our service is available. During the coming months it will be difficult to achieve this goal as there is such a demand for our service and we are still rolling out our Base Stations.

Q: What fees are involved in becoming a subscriber to the proposed Wireless network?

A: The Wireless’ network does not utilize phone or data lines, so for a typical installation the only charges you will incur will be, your monthly subscription fee and a one time connection fee. In cases where extra special hardware or cabling is required it will be necessary to make an additional charge to cover these costs. Please see our pricelist for our full schedule of fees.

Q: Does the service deteriorate in heavy rain or bad weather conditions?

A: No, our service is not affected by weather. We are expert in the construction of high-reliability Wireless networks and take regard of fade conditions when designing networks.

Q: Can I network more than one computer?

A: Yes. Our service uses Ethernet to connect to your existing LAN so you can connect more than one computer to our service.

Q: As my business grows and our broadband needs increase, can I change my Internet connection speed?

A: Yes. We can upgrade your service at any time, the Customer Premises equipment that we install can provide all levels of service without any modification. In the case of a service upgrade an administration charge will be made.

Q: Do you provide email and web hosting and VLAN services?

A: We are committed to providing high-speed, highly reliable Internet access via its fixed wireless broadband network. As part of our value add packages, we also provides you with your own domain for e-mail and web, a suitable number of e-mail addresses on our e-mail server. We also offer VLAN services for customers who have offices in a number of different locations within our service area.

Q: I have read that there are security issues with Wireless services, how secure is your service?

A: The Internet is a very insecure environment so it is important to take the necessary steps to ensure that you protect your data. Some wireless technologies (particularly 802.11b) are prone to eavesdropping by ‘War drivers’ especially if they are not installed by competent personnel. We have considerable experience in the design and installation of secure Wireless solutions. Our Broadband Wireless networks are constructed using highly secure equipment which is not widely available to potential hackers. This equipment incorporates security algorithms that are proprietor and are highly secure.

Q: How reliable is the Wireless Network ?

A: We are specialists in the construction and management of outdoor Broadband Wireless Networks. We have chosen high-quality equipment from some of the best suppliers of Broadband Wireless systems. All of our Base Stations, links and servers are secured from unauthorized access and contain power backup systems so that they continue to operate in the case of a power outage. We continuously monitor our network from our Network Operations Centre in Athlone.
